Practical Information for Trekking the Phikuri Peak Trail

Best Time to Trek

The Phikuri Peak Trek can be best savored in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In spring, the woods are full of blooming rhododendron, and scents of flowers perfume the air on the mountain. The air is usually keen and clear, with nothing standing between the eye and the Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. Autumn, after the monsoon, rewards trekkers with stable weather, verdant green landscapes, and cool, pleasant temperatures — and is thus the ideal window of visibility and comfort. These months also coincide with several local festivals, giving tourists a chance to witness traditional celebrations in Tamang and Gurung villages. Tip: Avoid the monsoon month (June–August) since trails are wet, there are leeches, and mountain visibility is bad. Snow and cold begin in winter (December–February), and over 3,000m, might not be a good idea unless you’re prepared to endure harsh conditions.

Trekking Difficulty & Physical Conditioning Phikuri Peak trek is a moderate level trek, which gives the right amount of accessibility along with adventure. It is not technically challenging, but you should be physically fit enough to hike long days (5–7 hours) on mixed terrain. The trek involves forest walk, ridge walk, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The gentle slope keeps the trek easy and accessible for a beginner, if you are in shape with some experience of trekking. Recommended preparation includes regular cardio (hiking, jogging, cycling), leg strengthening, and light pack training 3–4 weeks before the trek.

Permits and Entry Requirements

Although the Phikuri Trail is less commercialized than routes like Everest or Annapurna, it still lies within protected regions requiring official trekking permits. You’ll need: TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System):

Facilitates tracking of trekkers for safety and enables sustainable tourism.

Langtang National Park Entry Permit: Since part of the trail is within the conservation area, this permit contributes to environmental conservation and community development.

Where to get permits: Both can be found in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office or through a registered trekking agency.

Accommodation The most impressive feature of Phikuri Trek is the experience of authentic homestay. The locals can offer accommodation in traditional stone and wood houses typically surrounded by gardens and terraced fields. During a homestay stay you can: Consume organic locally produced food products such as dal bhat, millet bread, seasonal vegetables and sometimes yak products. Participate in the cultural rituals of cooking and sharing stories. Benefit rural communities economically and socially in a direct way. For the more adventurous, camping is also possible, particularly at higher points such as Bhalchhe or close to Phikuri Danda. Campsites are usually peaceful and established in forest clearings or open grasslands with Himalayan vistas. Tip: It’s advisable to bring a light sleeping bag even when staying at homestays since it gets very cold at night.

Packing Essentials & Gear Checklist Owing to the diversity of terrain, varying altitudes, and weather unpredictability, smart packing is necessary. Here’s the detail of what to pack:

Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers

Fleece or insulated mid-layer

Waterproof & windproof outer layer (Gore-Tex or equivalent)

Lightweight hiking pants and a warm pair for nights

Beater, beanie/hat, and UV-protecting sunglasses

Buff or neck gaiter (great for dust, wind, or chill)

Footwear: well-broken-in hiking boots with ankle support

Camp shoes or sandals for nights

Extra socks (preferably wool or synthetic)

Gear: Sleeping bag (comfort rated to -10°C ideal) Headlamp with extra batteries Trekking poles (helpful on steep descents) Lightweight backpack (35–50L) with rain cover Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder Water purification tablets or filter Personal first-aid kit with blister care, altitude medication, painkillers, and antiseptics

Extras: Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) Lip balm with SPF Quick-dry towel Power bank or solar charger Trash bag (Leave No Trace!)

Pro Tip: Cell service may be spotty, and electricity is limited in higher elevations. Download offline maps (i.e., Maps.me or Gaia GPS), and carry a paper map as a backup.

Final Thoughts: A Journey Beyond the Ordinary In a country blessed with world-class trekking trails, the Phikuri Peak Trek is a hidden gem — pristine, untouristy, and unforgettable. It’s a trek beyond the ordinary; an invitation to step into a story written by misty woods, sacred mountains, and time-tried traditions.

As you hike through Tamang and Gurung villages, sleep under starry nights, and rise to sunrise over the Ganesh Himal, you’ll find more than beauty — you’ll find connection. To the land. To the people. And, perhaps, to yourself. Phikuri Peak for those travelers who want raw authenticity, who want more than insta-moments — want to feel the vibe of Nepal beneath their feet and in every smile they receive from a host local.

Ready to Walk Where Few Have? Don’t just follow the beaten path. Create your own story in the highlands of Nuwakot. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker looking for something new, or a curious soul longing for meaning in the mountains — Phikuri Peak awaits you. Plan. Drive the less-known road. Find Phikuri. Find yourself.

Not too far and is only a few hours trek from the city, and is absolutely worth it. We weren’t too sure of zip-lining at first but it was surprisingly well built , professional, and of course the whole…

The view is breath taking. Insane ride, extremely fast, loved it. An absolute must do for both adventure junkies and nature lovers.

Angling & Fishing In Nepal
Maybe the regions of Nepal are not that known when it comes to angling and sportfishing, but if you get a chance do bring your fishing rod with your travel gear to Nepal. Some of the popular fishing trips in Nepal are done in Karnali, Babai valley in the Bardiya National Park. Chitwan also hosts a number of places like the confluence of Seti and Trisuli rivers on the Tribhuvan Highway and also in the confluence of Kaligandaki and Trisuli river.

Anglers can try their luck in the clear waters of Pokhara’s lakes as well. While Phewa Tal offers some good sport, there is considerable activity and is not the ideal place for a quiet day’s fishing. Begnas Tal and Rupa Tal are a better bet. Get out there on any of several local buses that start plying early morning or bike your way there. You can hire a boat and go out to some of the good spots in the lake.

Hot air ballooning has over recent years become very popular with tourists, it affords the most spectacular bird’s eye view of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan ranges towering in the background. On a clear day it’s a superb way to view the Himalaya (from over 6000m up), and the view of the valley is equally breathtaking.

There are daily hot balloon flights from different locations in the valley, weather permitting, from the first week of October through to the end of April. The take off is soon after sunrise as the winds are usually at their calmest then. Flights are organised in the summer months as well but that is even earlier in the morning. Five people can travel comfortably in the basket but it is not advisable to bring very small children along. Wear sturdy shoes, sun glasses, gloves and a cap. It does not get any colder in the balloon than on the ground

Rock Climbing In Nepal:

The growing Himalayas are a temptation for those that want to be tethered to them – or want to free climb the mountains. Whatever your pleasure, these young mountains are sure to offer enough finger-clinging holds to give a lifetime of memories. Most trekking outfitters offer all the gear you’ll need for mountaineering. But for more specific climbing needs, consider coming loaded with your own gear.

Rock Climbing is perhaps one of the least promoted sport in Nepal. However, some rock faces have been developed as training grounds for enthusiastic climbers both local and foreign. Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has been providing separate training on rock climbing for the last six years to school -(children and to college students basically to arouse their interest in this field as well as in mountaineering.

Rock climbing as a sport started in the United Kingdom in the 60’s. As the sport grew, climbers found it difficult to get a way from work and pursue climbing in the hills on a regular basis. Climbing enthusiasts found it difficult to go far away from the cities after work. Therefore, they improvised methods and attempted the steep corners of the buildings to simulate the rock climbing.

Thus started the present day simulated rock climbing. These can be built right in the heart of cities or indoors and they provide easy and convenient access to climbers. In India, this new sport of climbing is catching up very fast and there is also a rapid expansion going on in creating basic infrastructure facilities.

Rock climbing is not very different from mountaineering except that instead of snow there are rocks involved in this adventure sport. Rock climbing’s most basic features include climbing a rock face, using only hands, feet and a safety rope.

If you are good at climbing, then you can definitely try out this sport. But, some rock traverses in certain areas extend over great lengths and merit championship status. Certain climbs can often prove grueling and tough, but the magic of the surrounding mountains landscapes always keep the spirits high of a climber.

Fly Like A Bird ! Ever since man first looked up at the sky, he was yearned to glide and soar like an eagle in the sky. Parasailing and Paragliding are indeed, experiences that combine the wonder of smooth sailing in the air and the thrill of soaring high above the ground. Once in the air, one may experience the ethereal serenity of the sport. It is an experience that is surprisingly, thrilling as well as becalming. Para gliding uses “thermals’ as the driving force, and is the closest one can get, to being a bird. In perfect weather conditions one can stay aloft for over three hours and can soar to heights more than 3,000m.

Nepal forms a rectangle on the southern slopes of the Himalaya and is without exception, the most stunning country imaginable. The main area for paragliding is the Pokhara valley, commanding views of 3 of the worlds 8000m peaks with friendly and constant conditions for your paragliding holiday.

Tandem flying involves a pilot flying with a passenger. Both have separate harnesses that are attached to each other and the wing. Paragliding harnesses are built for comfort and safety, they feel more like an armchair. Once launched the passenger just sits back, relaxes and takes in the epic scenery. Even taking pictures is not a problem. Due to the portable nature and easy launch characteristics of a paraglider (they fit into a rucksack) We can take them anywhere and fly them from most mountains in Nepal.

We take a 20 min jeep ride from Pokhara to Sarangkot the viewpoint 2000ft above Lakeside. From here we can see 3 of the highest mountains in the world. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manasulu, all over 8000 m. We offer 3 types of tandem flight from here.

If you thought bungee jumping was restricted to some places in Europe, New Zealand and America, it’s time you got and update. The sport has finally found a natural home in the highest mountain range in the world. The ultimate thrill of a bungee jump can now be experienced in Nepal at perhaps the best site in the world.

Nepal’s first bungee jumping site is situated 160m over the wild Bhote Koshi river, and located close to the Nepal-Tibet border, a three-hour bus ride from Kathmandu. As can be arranged on arrival in Kathmandu. As of now, there is only one agency offering this sport. The jump, at 160m, was designed by one of New Zealand’s leading bungee consultants, and is operated by some of the most experienced jump masters in the business. It’s mishap-proof. The agency takes safety “very, very seriously”.

Location : Less than 3 hours outside Kathmandu by Ultimate Bungy Shuttle. You will travel the Arniko (Kathmandu/Lhasa) Highway to within 12km of the Tibet Border and the famous Friendship Bridge.

The Gorge : Ultimate Bungy Nepal takes place on a 166m wide steel suspension bridge over the Bhoti Kosi River.

The Bridge : Swiss designed, specially for bungy jumping with a 4x saftey factor. The bridge has a loading factor of 250kg per running meter. This means that the bridge will hold 250 x 166 = 41,500kg or 4.5 tonnes. And… those are Swiss measurements! * Over 6000 meters of steel wire was used to build the bridge * Longest suspension bridge in Nepal * The bridge joins two sides of a great valley. Before its construction, locals walked five hours to cross this river gorge.
