Trekking to Everest Base Camp can be a stiff challenge for anyone, no matter what age but we realize that as the years go by, actually achieving the goal can become more of a challenge for older people. This trek is designed for people who are generally older or perhaps have a minor disability, but nevertheless would like to share in “The Everest Base Camp Experience” in a more leisurely way. The itinerary below has been extended by five days, to allow more time on the trail, compared to our normal E.B.C. itinerary.

The Everest Base Camp trek takes you right into the heart of the great Himalayas and its hardy people, with awe-inspiring views of many of the world’s highest and most beautiful mountains. Couple this with some truly fascinating Sherpa villages, along with some of the world’s highest Buddhist monasteries and the highest peaks on Earth, it is no wonder it is described as a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.

Everest Base Camp Trekking for Seniors

It has taken millions of years and unimaginably powerful forces to create this mountain range, the Himalayas are literally the result of what happens when two continents collide. It changed the global climate system at the time and still shapes the global climate around it today.

The journey starts with an unforgettable flight from Kathmandu to the mountain airstrip at Lukla in the lap of the Himalayas. The trail takes you through Sherpa villages, past cultivated fields we follow the Dudh Kosi and climb up to Namche Bazaar.Once above the tree-line the scenery is stark but in some ways more spectacular. The monastery at Thyangboche is a photographer’s paradise, set against the backdrop of Ama Dablam, Everest and other huge snow-capped peaks, it stands peacefully serene.

The vivid colours of Thyangboche only add to a sense of something almost sureal in this area. With plenty of  time for acclimatization en route we journey on to our goal Everest Base Camp, on the Khumbu Glacier.Once there you realise that the hard work and effort was nothing compared to the rewards gained from being amongst the highest mountains on earth.

The trek to Ghorepani – Poon Hill (Pun Hill) is probably the most popular short trek in Nepal, it can be done in as little as five days. The benefit of this particular trek is from Pokhara it takes an hour of particular beauty by car to reach the trek start, within another hour you are not only witnessing some spectacular views of the mountains, you are also walking through charming villages, mainly inhabited by the Gurung & Magar ethnic groups.

There are many dense (and very colorful in the spring) rhododendron forests to take in, full of birds and deep sub-tropical valleys to negotiate. If that were not enough, the magnificent Annapurnas and Machhapuchhare (Fishtail Peak) in particular, dominate the skyline.

A highlight of this trip is to make the climb of Poon Hill for some fantastic views of both the Dhaulagiri range and the Annapurna range. Dhaulagiri (8,167m) Annapurna (8,091m) along with numerous other peaks at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. Because it is a popular trek, the facilities found on the trail of a better standard, with hot showers and great food.

The Annapurna base camp trek is a classic for trekkers and it can easily be combined with a trip to Pun Hill or other lower altitude treks. The principal peaks of the western portion of the great Annapurna Himal including Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Fang, Annapurna, Ganagapurna, Annapurna 3 and Machhapuchhare are arranged almost precisely in a circle about 10 miles in diameter within a deep glacier-covered amphitheater at the center.

From this glacier basin, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, the Modi Khola knifes its way south in a narrow gorge below fully 4000mtrs deep. Further south, the gorge opens up into a wide and fertile valley the domain of the Gurungs. The middle and upper portions of Modi Khola offer some of the best short trekking routes in Nepal, and the valley is located so that these treks can also be easily combined with treks into the Kali Gandaki region and Muktinath to the west.

In spite of the great heights of the surrounding peaks and ice walls the valley floor between around 4300 mtrs can provide comfortable camping spots in good weather or alternatively you can stay at a lodge.
